How to get cited by ChatGPT, step by step

A practical order of work for getting your pages cited in ChatGPT answers: check crawler access, pick the prompts, study the sources ChatGPT already uses, and rewrite pages so they can be quoted.

A citation in ChatGPT is the source link attached to a claim in an answer. It isn't the same as a mention. ChatGPT can name your brand without linking to you, and it can link to your page while recommending a competitor. You want both, but citations are the part you can influence most directly, because they come from pages ChatGPT fetched while searching.

This is the order we work in.

1. Make sure OpenAI's crawlers can reach you

OpenAI uses separate user agents for separate jobs. GPTBot collects content for training. OAI-SearchBot indexes pages for ChatGPT search. ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a conversation calls for it. If your robots.txt or CDN blocks OAI-SearchBot, your pages are unlikely to appear as search citations, however good they are.

Plenty of sites block GPTBot on purpose, and that's a fair business decision. Just make sure the block doesn't catch the search crawler too. A wildcard rule or a CDN setting that blocks all AI bots can do exactly that.

Then check the logs and not only the rules. A robots.txt that allows a bot means little if the server answers it with errors or timeouts.

2. Pick the prompts you want to be cited for

Citations happen prompt by prompt. Write down the questions a buyer asks before choosing you: comparisons ("X vs Y for small teams"), shortlists ("best tools for..."), and how-to questions where your product is part of the answer. Group them by intent so you can see where you're strong and where you're absent.

3. Study what ChatGPT cites today

Run each prompt and look at the sources. You'll usually find a mix of vendor pages, review platforms, publisher comparison articles, and community threads. This is the most useful research you can do, because it shows the kind of page ChatGPT trusts for that particular question.

If the cited pages are vendor comparison pages, you probably need one of your own. If they're third-party listicles, you need to be on those lists. If they're Reddit threads, a page on your site won't replace them, and the effort belongs in the places where that conversation already happens.

4. Write pages that can be quoted

ChatGPT tends to cite pages that answer the question directly and early. Some habits that help:

  • Put the direct answer in the first paragraph under each heading, then expand on it.
  • State facts plainly: who it's for, the pricing model, integrations, limits. Vague marketing copy gives the model nothing to lift.
  • Use comparison tables where buyers compare. They're easy to parse and easy to cite.
  • Keep important content in the HTML. If it only appears after client-side JavaScript runs, some crawlers will see an empty page.
  • Date your content and keep it current. Stale pricing or feature claims give the engine a reason to cite someone else.

5. Earn the third-party sources

For many commercial prompts, the citations that decide the answer sit on other domains. List the domains that come up repeatedly across your prompt set. Those are your outreach targets: get reviewed, get added to the comparison, answer the thread honestly. It's slower than editing your own pages, but it's often where the competitors you keep losing to have their edge.

6. Measure, then repeat

Checking prompts by hand once is a starting point, not a measurement. Answers change between runs and over time, so the same prompts need to be tracked on a schedule.

For client work we use Promptwatch. Its citation analytics shows which of your pages ChatGPT and the other engines cite, which competitor domains they cite instead, and how that moves over time, with Reddit and YouTube citations broken out separately. Agent Analytics sits on your crawler logs and shows the crawl-to-citation path: whether OAI-SearchBot fetched a page, whether it hit errors, and whether that page later turned up as a citation.

That distinction saves weeks. A page that gets crawled but never cited has a content problem. A page that never gets crawled has an access problem, and no rewrite will fix it.

Once the first round of fixes ships, run the cycle again. New prompts appear, competitors publish, and the sources ChatGPT leans on shift. Citation work doesn't end, but it gets much faster once you know where to look.
